Happy 50th anniversary, UC San Diego.

This year, we are marking five decades of “Achieving the Extraordinary” and I invite you to be a part of our celebration. Over the next year, we will have numerous events to honor our founders, reflect on our achievements and look forward to the next 50 years. Everyone is welcome—students, staff, faculty, alumni, university friends and community members—because you have helped shape the past, present and future of this world-class university. Our three signature events will be Founders’ Day on November 18, which is the day in 1960 that UC San Diego was established officially; Innovation Day Expo and Symposia (IDEaS), February 22 to 25; and Green Open House on April 16.

I also encourage you to participate in Volunteer50: Chancellor’s Call to Service. I am challenging every member of our UC San Diego community to perform 50 hours of service during our anniversary celebration. This initiative is very important to me since service is a part of our mission. In fact, UC San Diego was recently ranked the number one university in the nation for our commitment to service. The Volunteer50 initiative is our chance as a university family to give back to a community that has supported us for 50 years. Through this initiative, I hope San Diegans will realize how much we care about our region and our world, and recognize the widespread and diverse contributions of the UC San Diego community.

I look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary with you.

With warm regards,

Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor
